Most herbs need a sunny area with well drained soil to grow. Herbs are easy and fun to grow and are great for culinary uses. They add flavor to food and what could be better than adding fresh herbs? Using fresh Basil in tomato sauces, Chives in salads or potatoes, Marjoram in fish or soups, Sage and Thyme in poultry dressings, Mints in juices, or Stevia as a natural sweetener will definitely spice up your food.

Herbs can be planted directly in the ground or in pots. Planting a variety of herbs around a potted tomato or pepper plant can be both decorative and useful. Plant a salsa pot using a Roma Tomato, Jalapeno Pepper, Cilantro, and Greek Oregano or a spaghetti bowl with Basil, Oregano, Italian Parsley, Rosemary and Thyme. If possible, keep pots on a deck or patio for convenience. For areas with cold winters, dry or freeze your herbs to make the most use of your plants. Herbs can also be potted and grown indoors by a sunny window for fresh selections all year.

Some herbs can be planted for medicinal purposes or pest control. Fennel, Dill, Parsley and Rue are great additions for the butterfly garden as they are host plants as food for larvae. Herbs can also be planted just for their aromatic foliage or the beauty of their blooms. Some herbs such as Rue and Lavender are used only for ornamental gardening as they are not edible. Lavender can be easily dried and used for potpourri or sachets. Whatever the reason, herbs will be a great addition to the landscape.
